CBD in beauty has become the latest “it” in the beauty and skincare world and it looks like it is here to stay. Have you heard about CBD Face Masks yet? If not, you’re in the right place.
Unlike other raging trends which come and go with time, this is more than a trend. CBD is a lifestyle. And a healthy one that is.
CBD in Beauty Products
CBD in beauty products is the only trend in the industry that competes with the popularity of Korean Skincare Products in the Western World. Ever since CBD’s incorporation in cosmetic products, people have been quite judgemental about what it can and cannot do for skincare and beauty.
We’re here to clear the air of whether CBD has some merit or is it all just marketing puffery. Since this article is not exactly about that, check out our piece on “All you need to know about CBD in beauty products” for a more detailed explanation on what CBD can contribute towards your skincare and beauty care routine.
So what is a CBD Face Mask and how is it any different than consuming CBD Oil?
A CBD Face Mask is just like an ordinary targeted action, peel-off face mask, with the goodness of CBD infused into it. There are different CBD face masks available for purposes like exfoliation, hydration, moisturisation, skin tightening etc so you can get your weekly dose of parlour pampering right in the comfort of your home.
CBD face masks are a step up from ordinary face masks though. How so? Read on!
Benefits of CBD
CBD, or cannabidiol is a Cannabis extracted compound that interacts with a crucial bodily system called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and exerts effects that affect us from head to toe, literally!
The ECS is responsible for regulating our sleep, memory, digestion, metabolism, mood, balance etc and so CBD works with the ECS to enhance all of the above. But also being an anti-inflammatory and a strong antioxidant, CBD can do a lot for your skin, including:
- Combating the effects of environmental aggressors such as pollution, sun rays etc
- Reducing redness, sensitivity and swelling on the face
- Signalling the ECS for production of keratinocytes, which is the primary cell on the outer layer of our skin, increasing our skin’s ability to protect itself from external threats.
- Some research has also suggested that it prevents the growth of cancerous cells in skin.
- CBD helps with various skin problems like acne, eczema and psoriasis and other inflammation-related issues
- Evens and brightens skin tones
- Delays signs of aging, fine lines and wrinkles
- Helps with skin oil production and management; largely benefiting people with dry skin.
Trust us when we say, CBD is unlike any other option in the market. But coming towards the second question in our heading, how is using a CBD face mask different from consuming CBD oil?
CBD Oils and Their Consumption
CBD oils can be consumed in two ways, either by adding them to your food, drink etc or by placing a few drops under your tongue. The latter is more effective than the former.
But here’s what they have in common; CBD hits your bloodstream in both ways and expresses itself from there. The effect therefore, is very general and it affects almost all of your body systems and functions.
CBD Face Masks and Their Action
A CBD face mask or other CBD topicals, on the other hand, never enter your bloodstream. The CBD is absorbed by the endocannabinoid receptors in your skin and so it has more of a directed action towards skin rather than for your health. CBD topicals need to be applied generously for them to enter the skin so you would need to keep that in mind if you use a CBD cream mask but a CBD face oil or peel-off face mask has the compound in its fluid which is a watery substance and so has no problem entering the skin.
Please note that CBD is not intended to diagnose or treat any diseases for now and is only meant to be taken as a supplement. And although CBD itself does not have any side effects, it is known to exhibit some unwanted side effects when it interacts with certain medications such as anti-depressants, heart medicines etc. Just be on the safe side, consult with your doctor before using CB if you’re on any type of medications.
Can a CBD Face Mask Get You High?
Sadly, Cannabis has been around for centuries and even CBD has been under research for a decade, but the association between marijuana’s effects and anything Cannabis is so strong that we have to answer this question in every article.
No, CBD cannot get you high. The psychotropic properties are limited to the compound THC alone, which is altogether a different compound. Taking THC out of the equation leaves you with pure wellness and calm, no trippy effects! Also, good quality CBD is only sourced from Hemp, a type of Cannabis Sativa that has a naturally high amount of CBD and very low amount of THC. The plant itself has a plethora of magical benefits, but that is another story for another day.
Are CBD Face Masks Legal?
CBD as a compound was legalised in most states of the US, Europe and Australia and all over the UK, Canada in 2018. Its legality is still under debate for most Asian countries. However, if you are uncertain of the legal laws in your area then all you need to do is steer clear of Full Spectrum CBD and opt for Broad Spectrum and CBD isolate only. Oh what’s that? Well let us tell you!
What is CBD Isolate, Broad Spectrum CBD and Full Spectrum CBD?
CBD Isolate, as the name indicates is 99.7% pure CBD and no other Cannabis-or otherwise compound.
Broad Spectrum CBD contains other beneficial Cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes and essential oils in addition to CBD (except THC). It is believed that these compounds collectively exert an “ entourage effect” and enhance CBD powers.
Full Spectrum CBD is the same as broad spectrum CBD except that it contains THC in addition to all the other compounds in the broad spectrum version. The amount varies but generally is not more than 0.3%, which is the legal limit in most countries. But do be sure to check the exact percentage before buying it. If your country’s laws do not permit the amount (as an example, France’s THC limit for CBD products is 0.2% and Sweden and Hong Kong have a strict 0% policy), then it’s better that you consider using CBD isolate or Broad Spectrum CBD only.
Are CBD Face Masks Expensive?
CBD face masks are one-time-use disposable sheets that are relatively inexpensive. They cost somewhat the same as or slightly higher than the normal face masks in the market, with the average range being around $15-20. Cream masks are of course a bit pricier than the one time use ones, with prices from double the sheet mask to more, but can give you up to 5-6 uses.
What to Look For in a CBD Face Mask?
Beware of scammers in the CBD space. CBD is extracted (mainly) through CO2 extraction method which requires the use of sophisticated (and very expensive) machinery. Also, singling out a compound also wastes a lot of it in the plant and so of course CBD is a little expensive. Any scammer who tries to sell you for less is most definitely selling a fake product. The product either has no CBD or is only lightly coated by it which is of absolutely no use to you.
How to prevent a CBD scam? It’s actually quite simple. All you need to do is do your homework. The points below also help you choose the best type of product for you.
The CBD industry is not heavily regulated for now and so no authorities can guarantee you the safety or effectiveness of a CBD product. The only way to be sure of the authenticity is to
- Look for third-party testing. Third party testers are neutral parties that can assure the safety and quality of a product.
- Check the ingredient listing carefully. Authentic companies have nothing to hide. They have clearly mentioned their ingredients and the percentage with it as a public declaring of the amount of CBD in their product whereas substandard products usually beat around the bush when it comes to listing proper ingredients or the quantity.
- Make sure the company is a well-reputed one. This way you’ll be less likely defrauded. Check reviews online or ask around!
- Question the origin of the product’s CBD. Ensure that this CBD is derived from organically sourced Hemp only and contains no other plant traces.
- Learn the difference between CBD Isolate, Broad Spectrum CBD and Full Spectrum CBD to choose one according to your preferences and the Cannabis laws of your state and country. Refer to our paragraph of CBD legality above for more information on this!
Hmm, is there more? Well technically yeah..
That’s all about choosing a CBD product for you. But since we’re talking about a cosmetic product, it is also important that you choose a product according to your skin type (determined by the action of the mask) because even though CBD suits all skin types, the rest of the ingredients may not.
Also be sure to read the action of the mask before purchasing it. Your skin requirement and skincare routine will determine whether you need a hydrating mask, an exfoliating mask or a simple night care one! All of them have different effects and thus, different results.
CBD Olive Oil Masks
CBD Olive Oil is by far the best cosmetic use of CBD in the beauty line. A CBD Olive Oil combines the goodness of two incredibly powerful and trusted health booster CBD and extra virgin olive oil to repair your hair and rejuvenate your skin, making it firmer, more supple and younger looking.
DIY Olive Oil Mask for Glowing Skin
Now when you have your CBD Olive Oil, you can make a DIY mask that you can be sure is free of chemicals, additives and preservatives, after all, that is what is believed to be Cleopatra’s beautiful skin secret.
Also, with winters around the corner you will need every fatty acid and vitamin dose you can get to lock moisture in your skin. Here is our recipe for a DIY olive oil mask which will moisturise and nourish your skin, making it glow from inside.
What You’ll Need
- 1 Tbsp CBD Olive Oil
- 1 tsp. Raw Honey
- 1 Vitamin E Capsule
- Egg Yolk (if you have dry skin) Egg White (if you have oily skin)
- ½ Tsp Orange Zest.
CBD Olive Oil works great with all of the ingredients above. But you’ve had a bad experience with any of the above ingredients, feel free to leave it out. If you’ve never used such DIY masks before then do a patch test while doing this first.
Tip: Using this mask when you’re fresh out of the shower will ensure that Olive Oil locks in all the water molecules that your face just absorbed, giving you a hydrated and glowing finish.
Steps on How to Make the Mask
In a bowl, mix CBD Olive Oil with Honey.
Heat the mixture lightly. This helps with spreading of the mask as both oil and Honey are viscous in nature. Do not overheat. It will destroy the nutrients in the mask
Add Orange Zest, The vitamin capsule and the Egg Yolk or Egg White.
Whisk until its blended well.
And you’re done!
Now use a cotton ball or brush to apply the mask and leave it for 15 mins. The egg in the mask will have dried by then and so you can wash it off. Top it off with a light moisturizer and you’re good to go!
CBD Face Masks: Conclusion
Out of the many, many cosmetic options in the market, CBD is one that is free of marketing puffery and empty claims. Cannabis has been in use for centuries for pain management, nausea and other purposes and it is only now that we’ve been able to separate its beneficial compounds from the psychoactive ones to reap all of the benefits, without the high.
