Cannabidiol or CBD has been gaining popularity fast. Since the last decade, many developments have occurred in the CBD space. Such hype had led to questions like “can you make CBD oil at home?”. Well yes, making your own CBD Infused Olive Oil is a pretty easy task that you can carry out at your home without breaking your bank.
Like all cannabinoids, CBD too, is lipophilic. This simply means that CBD has a lot of affinity for fatty molecules. This is one reason why CBD tinctures contain a fatty base because it makes CBD readily absorbable in our body. Medium-chain triglycerides, Hemp Seed Oil, and Vegetable Oils are also common carrier oils that are used to hold CBD.
Today we’re bringing you another carrier oil that is known for its various health benefits and long shelf life. You guessed it right! Olives have been regarded as a fruit from heaven according to both The Bible and The Koran, and all for good reason. Below are some benefits of Olive Oil and why making CBD Olive Oil at home will do wonders for your skin.
CBD Infused Olive Oil: The Various Types of Olive Oil
Olive oil is collected simply by pressing whole olives under high pressure. The liquid fat that collects as a result of the pressure applied to the whole olives is basically olive oil. Depending on how the olives are processed, different grades of olive oil result including refined and unrefined Olive Oil.
Unrefined Oil, as the name suggests is pure in nature and contains no chemicals. They are not treated with heat or any other foreign agent, therefore, are purer in nature and stronger in taste.
Refined Oils on the other hand have been tampered with to remove any undesired substance and may contain chemicals. They have been treated with heat and are usually lighter in color. They also have a mild taste as compared to unrefined olive oil.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which is hailed all over the world is an unrefined, unprocessed type of Olive Oil that is extracted with careful considerations to meet certain standards of quality. Not only is it extremely pure in nature but also has the richest, fruitiest taste. It is also typically dark in color compared to other grades of olive oil and is more expensive than most oils.
CBD Infused Olive Oil: Health Benefits of Olive Oil
There are countless health benefits of Olive Oil. Not only is it considered a key ingredient to staying youthful but is also considered a potent antioxidant that fights off free radicals contributing to the development of the disease. For centuries, the Mediterranean inhabitants have consumed Olives in their daily lives. This can be deduced from the fact that all cooking in the Mediterranean is done using Olive Oil.
Inflammation is considered a driving force behind certain chronic health ailments which include Alzheimer’s and Type 2 Diabetes and also health problems like acne, eczema and the like. Olive oil contains the predominant mono-saturated fat named Oleic Acid, which makes up 75% of the oil content.
According to a study, the Oleic Acid has depicted a strong anti-inflammatory effect that has been compared to the allopathic medicine Ibuprofen. The acid was found to be a helpful agent in fighting cancer cells. It does that in a very unique way. It protects the healthy cells from the genes linked to cancer cells. Interesting, right?
Good Source of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 Fatty Acids are essentially important for your heart’s health. The human body utilizes this fatty acid by transforming it into prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are cyclic fatty acids that can block inflammation. Prostaglandins come in handy in regulating liver, heart, and kidney function by reducing blood pressure and promoting healthy cholesterol levels.
Great For Skin
Due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, Olive Oil also serves as a detoxifying agent for your skin that is bound to leave your skin refreshed and rejuvenated after its application. The use of Olive Oil on the skin is known to produce hydrating and moisturizing effects.
Many beauty products on the market today contain Olive Oil or its ingredients in one form or another. Oleic acid, which is the active ingredient in Olive Oil (as discussed above) not only supports the sebum production in your facial skin cells and forms a breathable protective layer around it, but also fights off aggressors and delays signs of aging.
Now that we’ve jotted down the benefits of Olive oil (some of which are quite similar to the benefits of CBD Oil), imagine combining both Cannabidiol and Olive Oil to create a supreme combination, better and effective than each of the compounds would have offered separately. Don’t know what CBD benefits are? Well then keep reading!
CBD Infused Olive Oil: Health Benefits of CBD
Cannabidiol is a natural compound extracted from the Hemp variety of the Cannabis Sativa plant. CBD is known to improve metabolism, digestive system, immune system function and sleep, all of which are major contributors to your skin’s overall health and texture.
Other than that;
- Promotes Appetite
- Anti epileptic
- Anti Cancerous
- A Powerful Antioxidant
- An Anti-inflammatory
- Pain Relief
- Boosts Immune System
CBD interacts with the Human Endocannabinoid System which is a cell-signalling system and controls major bodily systems. More on that below!
CBD signals the body’s skin cells to generate skin barriers against aggressors and keep your skin supple and plump.
The Endocannabinoid System and Olive Oil
The Endocannabinoid System is a naturally occurring biological system that is made up of endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids are actually lipid-based neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors. The receptors namely CB1 and CB2 are found in the peripheral nervous system and are involved in regulating cognitive processes and various other activities including sleep, balance, memory, mood etc alongside mediating the effects of cannabinoids.
In short, the endocannabinoid system is primarily responsible for maintaining the state of homeostasis in the human body.
CB1 and CB2 receptors, like any other cell in the body, need to be repaired and replaced once they complete their life cycle. A sufficient intake of omega-3 and omega-6 will provide the necessary nutrition to our body to repair and replace these receptors.
According to studies, omega-3, and omega-6 if taken in the right proportion (1:10) exhibit maximum effects. Surprisingly, this is the same ratio in which they occur naturally in extra virgin olive oil.
One thing is quite evident here. A synergy between the endocannabinoid system and extra virgin olive oil does exist. The properties of the extra virgin olive oil are also quite similar to Cannabidiol (plus-minus a few). A research suggests that extra virgin olive oil increases the sensitivity of the CB1 receptors to a specific gene in cancer cells, primarily in the human colon.
Making CBD Infused Olive Oil at Home
Now that you’ve fully understood how beneficial Olive oil is, maybe you can start thinking about making your own CBD infused Olive oil from the comfort of your home. This is a pretty simple process with a few pointers to be mindful of and that’s all. Interested in making your own CBD Olive oil then read on.
Things You’ll Need
- Buds of CBD rich strain of Hemp
- Baking Sheet
- Simple Olive Oil
- Baking Tray
Up ahead is a simple 5 step process that you can easily follow without breaking a sweat. So go get your gear ready!
- Prepare That Bud
Choosing the right strain is crucial to making your own CBD infused Olive Oil at home. You need to be mindful of the fact that you need to have a CBD rich strain for this process. Unless you have an assortment of products readily available, tracking down the right strain may prove to be a hectic job so first work on getting access to authorized dispensaries.
Bear in mind that you’ll need to decarb your bud before you can proceed with the next. You can either skip the decarboxylation step or decarb your bud using a microwave oven. To avoid the additional step of decarboxylation you may proceed with grinding your bud in a powdered form. Not only does this let the cannabinoids, terpenes and other beneficial compounds leach out from the powder but it is also earlier for the olive oil to absorb the cannabinoids and terpenes.
If you don’t feel like grinding your bud into fine powdered form you will have to decarb your hemp the other way which is also quite simple. You’ll need a baking sheet and a temperature of 250 F. Once you place the weed wrapped in a baking sheet in the oven, let it simmer there for a few minutes (3-4). Take it out after 3-4 minutes and move on with the next step.
- Steep The Prepared Bud Into Oil
Once you have decarboxylated your bud you can now move on with the next step which is actually quite simple. If you have decided to go with Virgin Olive Oil, bear in mind that with constant application of heat, the Virgin Olive Oil which tastes perfect otherwise will start to lose its taste and become bitter. Don’t worry! We have a solution to every problem.
To make sure your Virgin Olive Oil doesn’t lose its taste and flavour, make a mixture of Olive Oil with water. Yes! Just add 50% Olive Oil and 50% water to a saucepan and create a mixture. Put the saucepan under heat and let it slowly simmer.
Add the decarbed buds into the prepared mixture and let it simmer for a while.Once the Olive Oil reaches a boiling temperature of 200 F, let the mixture cook for 3-4 minutes at that temperature and take it off of the heat.
- Cool Your Mix & Collect It in a Jar
We’re almost halfway through the easy process of making CBD infused Olive at home. After you’re done heating the prepared mixture it is time to let it cool for a while not. Watch a movie, have a snack or take some rest to let the mixture cool down to room temperature.
Make sure that you do not interfere in any way whatsoever with the prepared mixture. Just place a lid over the saucepan and let it be for a few hours without any human interference.
After 3-4 hours, pay your prepared mixture a visit to see if it has cooled down to room temperature. If not, let it be for another hour or so. After the mixture has achieved room temperature it’s time to cool it down even further. It is time for you to collect the mixture in a Jar and proceed with the next step.
Collect the mixture into the Jar and close the lid of the jar tightly. Take the jar and leave it in the refrigerator for another 2-3 hours.
- Separate Olive Oil and Water
Finally we have arrived at the last and final step of this ultimate process of extracting CBD from the comfort of your home. Remember we added water to the Olive Oil to preserve its flavour since it was going to be exposed to heat for a long period of time.
If you paid attention in your chemistry class back in the day, Oil and Water do not mix. Once the mixture has completely cooled, take it out of the refrigerator and you’ll observe the CBD infused Olive Oil floating atop and the water down below. At lower temperatures, it will be easy for you to separate the mixture.
So there you go folks! Your very own CBD Olive Oil right from home is ready.
